The Emilie and Stephen Schumacher House is a historic home located in St. Peter, Minnesota. It's a great example of the Queen Anne architectural style. This special house was built for a local business owner named Stephen Schumacher. It was finished in 1887 and designed by a talented architect named Henry Gerlach.

Building a Dream Home

The Schumacher House was built in 1887. Stephen Schumacher, a local merchant, wanted a beautiful home. He hired Henry Gerlach to design it. Gerlach was an architect from Mankato. He designed many homes and businesses in the area.

A Special Style: Queen Anne

The house is built in the Queen Anne style. This style was popular in the late 1800s. Queen Anne homes often have towers, turrets, and decorative porches. They also feature different textures and colors. The Schumacher House shows many of these classic Queen Anne features.

Surviving a Storm

The Schumacher family owned the house for many years. In 1967, it was sold to new owners. It has always remained a private home. In 1998, a very strong tornado hit the area. This event is known as the 1998 Comfrey–St. Peter tornado outbreak. The house was badly damaged by the storm. Its roof was destroyed, and its turret was completely lost. Even the porch was damaged.

Bringing the House Back to Life

After the tornado, the house needed a lot of work. A big restoration project began. It took a whole year to carefully repair the home. The Minnesota Historical Society helped with this important work. They made sure the house was restored very carefully. It now looks much like it did before the storm.

Becoming a Historic Landmark

In 2000, the Emilie and Stephen Schumacher House became even more special. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important historic places in the United States. The house was recognized as an excellent example of Queen Anne architecture in the area. It helps us remember the history and beauty of old homes.
