Emma Sandys: A Talented Artist
Emma Sandys was born in Norwich, England, in 1843. Her father, Anthony Sands, was an artist too. He taught her some of her first art lessons. In 1853, her family changed their last name from Sands to Sandys.
Emma was inspired by her older brother, Frederick Sandys. He was a famous artist and part of a group called the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. This group of artists wanted to paint in a detailed and colorful way, like artists before the time of Raphael. Frederick's friend, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, also influenced Emma's art.
Emma's Artistic Journey
Emma' started painting professionally around 1863. She showed her artwork in London and Norwich between 1867 and 1874. Her paintings often featured children and young women. She liked to dress them in old-fashioned or medieval clothes.
Her artworks usually had backgrounds filled with bright, colorful flowers. She used both oil paints and chalk for her portraits. Emma mostly worked in Norwich, but she might have also spent time in her brother Frederick's art studio in London. Sadly, Emma Sandys passed away in Norwich in November 1877.
