About Emmaste
How Emmaste Became a Village
Emmaste officially became a village in 1977. Before that, it was known as an 'asundus' or settlement. This settlement started in the 1920s. It grew around the old Emmaste Manor, which was called German: Emmast in German.
Changes Over Time
The eastern part of Emmaste used to have its own name, Nõmme. In the 1920s and 1930s, Nõmme was a village on its own. Later, in 1977, another nearby village called Viiterna was joined with Emmaste village. This made Emmaste a bit bigger.
