Emmett, Texas facts for kids
Emmett is a small, quiet place in Texas, United States. It's what we call an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does. Emmett is located about 21 miles (34 km) west of a bigger town called Corsicana, in the western part of Navarro County.
The Beginning of Emmett
Emmett was first settled not long after the American Civil War, which ended in 1865. People started building homes and businesses there, and the community slowly grew. By the year 1900, Emmett had about 250 people living there.
Life in Early Emmett
Life in Emmett in the early 1900s was different from today. The community had important places that helped people live and work:
- A school, where children learned.
- A blacksmith shop, where skilled workers made and repaired metal tools and horse equipment.
- A grocery store, where families could buy food and other supplies.
- Two corn mill/cotton gins, which were places where corn was ground into flour and cotton was separated from its seeds. These were very important for farmers in the area.
Why Emmett Changed
Emmett's growth slowed down and its population started to shrink after a new railroad line was built. This railroad went through a nearby town called Frost instead of Emmett. Railroads were like the highways of their time, bringing people and goods to towns. When the railroad didn't come through Emmett, many people and businesses moved to Frost or other places that had better access to transportation.
Emmett Today
By 1990, it was estimated that about 100 people still lived in the rural areas around Emmett. However, the old businesses like the blacksmith shop and grocery store were no longer there. Today, Emmett is mostly a rural area with homes, but it doesn't have the busy commercial center it once did.
