En-hegal, also spelled Enhengal (in the ancient Sumerian writing: ๐๐ถ๐ , which means en-แธซeโ-ลalโ), was likely an old ruler of the Sumerian city called Lagash. We only know about him from one special writing, called the "Tablet of En-hegal." This tablet talks about a business deal. If he really was a king of Lagash, experts believe he ruled around 2570 BC.
Who Was En-hegal?
En-hegal was a very old ruler who lived about 4,500 years ago. He might have been a king of Lagash, an important city in ancient Sumer. Sumer was a big civilization in Mesopotamia, which is now part of modern-day Iraq.
We don't have many records about En-hegal. Most of what we know comes from a single clay tablet. This tablet is like a very old document that tells us about a big land deal.
The Mysterious Tablet
The special tablet with En-hegal's name on it describes a large business deal. It seems that King En-hegal bought a huge amount of land. He might have purchased about 1,000 hectares of land. To give you an idea, that's like buying an area the size of 1,000 football fields!
An early translation of this tablet was shared by a scholar named George A. Barton. This translation helped us understand what the tablet says. It gives us a rare peek into the life of this possible ancient king.
What Was Lagash?
Lagash was an important city-state in ancient Sumer. A city-state was like a small country that included a city and the land around it. It had its own government and ruler. Lagash was one of the most powerful cities in Sumer. It played a big role in the history of the region.
