Endiandra floydii is a small tree that grows in rainforests. It is often called the Crystal Creek walnut. But don't let the name fool you! This tree is not related to the walnuts you might eat. Instead, it belongs to the laurel family, which includes plants like bay laurel. This special tree is named after an Australian plant expert, Alexander Floyd.

Where it Lives

The Crystal Creek walnut is found in a very specific area. It grows around Mount Warning in New South Wales, Australia. You can also find a few of these trees in nearby parts of Queensland.

These trees like to grow in rainforests. They can also be found under taller trees in areas where different types of forests meet. They prefer moderately steep slopes, but not higher than 430 metres above sea level.

Sadly, the Crystal Creek walnut is an endangered plant. This means there are not many of them left in the wild. It has a special rating called ROTAP 2E, which shows how rare and at risk it is.

What it Looks Like

The Crystal Creek walnut is a small tree. It often has new shoots growing from its base. When new leaves appear, they are a pretty pinkish-brown color.

The bark of the tree can be light or dark grey. Its leaves are shaped like an oval, or a narrow oval. They are usually 5 to 15 centimetres long and 2 to 5 centimetres wide.

Small, creamy green flowers appear on the tree in autumn. The fruit grows big in summer. It can be as large as an apple or a pear! When the fruit is ripe, it turns red to purplish-black. The seeds from the fruit usually sprout quite well.
