The Lauraceae are a family of flowering plants, often called the laurel family. This group includes the well-known bay laurel and many of its close relatives. These plants are part of a larger group called Laurales.
There are over 3,000 different species of plants in the laurel family. These species are grouped into more than 50 genera (plural of genus). You can find them all over the world, but they especially love warm places. They grow in temperate (mild climate) and tropical (hot and humid) regions. Many are found in southeast Asia and South America. Most plants in this family are evergreen trees or shrubs, meaning they keep their leaves all year. They often have a nice smell. However, some, like Sassafras, are deciduous, losing their leaves in the fall. One interesting genus, Cassytha, is made up of parasitic vines that grow on other plants.

What are Lauraceae Plants Like?
Leaves and Smell
Most plants in the laurel family have simple leaves. This means each leaf has a single blade, not divided into smaller leaflets. The leaves are usually arranged in an alternating pattern along the stem. Many of these plants are known for their strong, pleasant smell. This scent comes from special oils inside their leaves, bark, and wood.
Flowers and Fruits
The flowers of Lauraceae plants are usually small. They often have a greenish-yellow color. These flowers can grow in clusters or alone. After the flowers bloom, they produce a fruit. This fruit is often a drupe, which is a fleshy fruit with a hard pit inside. Think of a cherry or an avocado – they are both drupes!
Where Do Lauraceae Plants Grow?
Tropical and Temperate Homes
The laurel family is very diverse. Most of its members live in tropical and subtropical areas. These are regions near the equator where it's warm all year. You can find many species in places like Southeast Asia, Brazil, and Madagascar. Some species also grow in warmer temperate zones. These are areas with distinct seasons, but not extremely cold winters.
Important Habitats
Lauraceae plants are a key part of many ecosystems. They are especially important in rainforests. Their fruits provide food for many animals, including birds and mammals. The trees themselves offer shelter and habitat.
Famous Lauraceae Plants
Bay Laurel
One of the most famous members is the bay laurel (Laurus nobilis). Its leaves are used as a popular spice in cooking. You might have seen them in soups or stews. In ancient times, bay laurel was a symbol of victory and honor. Winners in ancient Greece and Rome wore crowns made of its leaves.
Cinnamon and Avocado
Did you know that cinnamon comes from a Lauraceae plant? The spice is made from the bark of Cinnamomum verum. Another very popular member is the avocado (Persea americana). Avocados are known for their creamy, nutritious fruit. They are a staple food in many parts of the world.
Sassafras and Camphor
Sassafras trees are also in this family. They are known for their unique leaf shapes. Their roots were traditionally used to make root beer. Another important plant is the camphor tree (Cinnamomum camphora). Its wood and leaves produce camphor, a substance used in medicines and perfumes.
Why are Lauraceae Plants Important?
Food and Spices
Many plants in the laurel family are important for food. We get delicious fruits like avocados from them. They also give us valuable spices like cinnamon and bay leaves. These spices add flavor to many dishes around the world.
Medicine and Other Uses
Some Lauraceae plants have been used in traditional medicine for centuries. Their oils and extracts are thought to have healing properties. The wood from some laurel trees is also used for building and furniture. Because many are aromatic, their oils are used in perfumes and soaps.
