Endre Czeizel (born April 3, 1935 – died August 10, 2015) was an important Hungarian doctor and scientist. He was a specialist in genetics, which is the study of how traits are passed down through families. He also worked in public health and was a university professor.
Dr. Czeizel graduated from Semmelweis University as a physician. He became famous for a big discovery: he found that vitamin B9, also known as folic acid, can help prevent serious birth defects. These defects include neural tube defects like spina bifida, which affect a baby's brain and spine. He sometimes published his work in English using the name Andrew E. Czeizel.
From 1984, he was the Hungarian Director for the United Nations World Health Organization. Later, from 1996 to 1998, he led the Hungarian National Institutes of Health. Endre Czeizel passed away from leukemia, a type of cancer, after about a year of treatment.
His Family Life
Endre Czeizel married Judit Gerőfi in 1958. They had three children together: two sons named Gábor and Balázs, and a daughter named Barbara.
After 12 years of marriage, Judit passed away. Endre later married Erzsébet Mécs. He also helped raise Erzsébet's daughter, Andrea. Later in his life, he had two more children, András and Fanni.
One of Czeizel's children married Gábor Fodor. Gábor Fodor is a well-known politician in Hungary and leads the Hungarian Liberal Party.
