Endymion is a character from ancient Greek mythology. He is often described as a very handsome young man. The story of Endymion is famous because of his connection with Selene, the goddess of the Moon.

In most versions of his myth, Endymion was a shepherd. He was so incredibly good-looking that Selene fell deeply in love with him. To keep him young and beautiful forever, Selene used her divine powers. She made him fall into a deep, eternal sleep. This way, he would never grow old or lose his charm.

Selene visited Endymion every night while he slept. She loved him very much. To make sure he would always stay young and handsome, she asked Zeus, the king of the gods, for a special favor. Zeus granted her wish. Endymion was put into an eternal sleep. This meant he would never age or die. He would remain forever young and beautiful.

The story of Endymion has inspired many artists and writers over centuries. Poets and playwrights have retold his myth. They often focus on themes of eternal youth and undying love.

One famous English playwright, John Lyly, wrote a play called Endymion. This play explores the themes of love and beauty. Later, the famous English poet John Keats wrote a long poem titled Endymion. His poem begins with the famous line, "A thing of beauty is a joy forever."

Endymion in Modern Stories

Endymion's name and story also inspired characters in popular modern culture. A well-known example is from the Japanese anime and manga series, Sailor Moon.

In Sailor Moon, a main character named Mamoru Chiba (known as Darien in the English version) is Prince Endymion. He is the past life version of a prince from Earth. He is also the true love of Princess Serenity, who is Usagi Tsukino (Serena) in her reincarnated form. In the future, he becomes King Endymion. He rules a place called Crystal Tokyo with Neo Queen Serenity. They also have a daughter named Rini.
