Ene-Margit Tiit is an important Estonian mathematician and statistician. She was born on April 22, 1934, in Tartu, Estonia. She is known for helping to create and lead the Estonian Statistical Society.

Early Life and Education

Ene-Margit Tiit's father, Arnold Humal, was also a mathematician. She was born in Tartu in 1934. She went to high school in Tallinn. In 1957, she finished her first university degree at the University of Tartu.

She continued her studies at the same university. In 1963, she earned her PhD. A PhD is a very high university degree. Her main research paper was about how to rearrange numbers in a special way.

Her Career and Achievements

After a short time working at the Estonian Agricultural Academy, Ene-Margit Tiit returned to the University of Tartu. She became a teacher and researcher there. Her work focused on different areas. These included mathematical statistics, which is about using math to understand data. She also studied population sciences, sociology (how people live in groups), and anthropology (the study of human societies).

Ene-Margit Tiit started the Department of Mathematical Statistics at the university. She was also its first regular professor. In September 1992, after Estonia became independent from the Soviet Union, the Estonian Statistical Society was formed. This group helps people who work with statistics. Ene-Margit Tiit became its first president.

She retired from her full-time job in 1999. However, she continued to work as a senior methodologist for Statistics Estonia. In this role, she helped create good ways to collect and understand important data about Estonia.

Awards and Recognition

Ene-Margit Tiit has received several honors for her work. In 1995, the University of Helsinki in Finland gave her an honorary doctorate. This is a special award given to people who have achieved great things.

She also received the Order of the White Star. This is a high award given by the President of Estonia to people who have done important work for their country. She is also an elected member of the International Statistical Institute. This is a global group of experts in statistics.
