Ene Ergma (born on February 29, 1944) is an important person from Estonia. She is known as both a politician and a scientist. She was a member of the Riigikogu, which is Estonia's parliament. Ene Ergma was part of the political party called the Union of Pro Patria and Res Publica. Before that, she was in the Res Publica Party. In 2016, she decided to leave the party because she felt it had changed too much.

Ene Ergma's Education and Science Work
Ene Ergma studied a lot to become a scientist. She earned her first degree in astronomy from Lomonosov Moscow State University. She also got her PhD in physics and mathematics from the same university. Later, she received another high degree, a DSc, from the Institute of Space Research in Moscow.
Before she started working in politics, Ene Ergma was a professor. She taught Astronomy at the University of Tartu in Estonia starting in 1988. In 1994, she became a member of the Estonian Academy of Sciences. This is a special group for top scientists in Estonia.
Studying Stars and Space
Most of Ene Ergma's science work focused on how certain objects in space change over time. She studied things like white dwarfs and neutron stars. These are very dense objects left behind after stars die. She also researched gamma ray bursts, which are powerful explosions in space that release a lot of energy.
Ene Ergma's Political Career
Ene Ergma held important roles in Estonian politics. From March 2003 to March 2006, she was the Speaker of the Riigikogu. This means she was in charge of leading the parliament's meetings. After that, from March 2006 to April 2007, she was the second Vice-President of the Riigikogu.
On April 2, 2007, she was chosen again to be the Speaker of the Riigikogu. She kept this job until March 2014.
Running for President
In 2006, Ene Ergma was a candidate for president of Estonia. This election happened in the Riigikogu. She received 65 votes, but she needed more to win the election.
She also ran to become the president of the University of Tartu, along with Volli Kalm and Birute Klaas. However, she was not chosen for that role.
Today, Ene Ergma is the leader of the Space Research Committee in the Riigikogu. This committee works on topics related to space science and exploration for Estonia.
