Ene Ergma (born February 29, 1944) is an important Estonian politician and a respected scientist. She has been a member of the Riigikogu, which is Estonia's parliament. Before becoming a politician, she was a well-known professor of astronomy. She was part of the Union of Pro Patria and Res Publica party, and before that, the Res Publica Party. In 2016, she left the party because she felt it had changed too much and become too focused on popular opinions.

Education and Scientific Career
Ene Ergma studied at Lomonosov Moscow State University. She earned a diploma in astronomy and a PhD in physics and mathematics. She also received a DSc degree from the Institute of Space Research in Moscow.
Astronomy Professor
Before entering politics, Ergma worked as a professor of Astronomy at the University of Tartu in Estonia. She started this role in 1988. In 1994, she was chosen to join the Estonian Academy of Sciences. This is a group of top scientists in Estonia.
Research on Space Objects
Most of her scientific work focused on how compact objects in space change over time. These objects include white dwarfs and neutron stars. She also researched gamma ray bursts, which are very powerful explosions in space.
Political Career in Estonia
Ene Ergma has held several important positions in Estonian politics. She was the Speaker of the Riigikogu, which is like the head of the parliament.
Speaker of the Riigikogu
From March 2003 to March 2006, Ergma served as the Speaker of the Riigikogu. After that, she was the second Vice-President of the Riigikogu from March 2006 to April 2007. She was then re-elected as the Speaker on April 2, 2007, and held this position until March 2014.
Presidential Election Attempt
In 2006, Ene Ergma was the only candidate in the first round of the 2006 Estonian presidential election. This election took place in the Riigikogu on August 28, 2006. She received 65 votes. However, she needed at least two-thirds of the Riigikogu votes to be elected, which was 3 more votes than she got.
Other Roles
She also ran for the presidency of the University of Tartu, along with Volli Kalm and Birute Klaas, but she was not chosen for that role. Ene Ergma is also the chairwoman of the Space Research Committee of the Riigikogu. This committee focuses on topics related to space research within the parliament.
