What Does Eneida's Coquí Look Like?
Eneida's coquí is a small frog. An adult frog is usually about 1.0 to 1.2 inches long. That's about the length of a paperclip!
Skin and Color
This coquí has small bumps, called warts, on its back and eyelids. Its skin is usually a light greenish or grayish-brown color. The underside of its body often has a yellow tint.
Many Eneida's coquís have two light-colored lines on their backs. These lines are slightly curved inwards, like a shallow bowl.
Eyes
The eyes of Eneida's coquí can be golden or green. They are usually dark with a pattern of black lines, like tiny veins.
Where Does Eneida's Coquí Live?
Eneida's coquí lives in the mountains of Puerto Rico. Its home is found at high elevations. These frogs live in areas that are 1,000 to 3,000 feet above sea level. This means they prefer cooler, higher places.
Why Is Eneida's Coquí Endangered?
Sadly, the number of Eneida's coquís has been shrinking. They have even disappeared from some places where they used to live. Scientists are studying why this is happening.
Protecting the Species
Because of this population drop, Eneida's coquí is now an endangered species. This means it is at risk of disappearing forever. Scientists are working to find out the exact reason for their decline. It seems that losing their habitat is not the main problem. This makes it harder to know how to protect them best.
