Engin Akyürek (born October 12, 1981) is a famous actor, writer, and author from Turkey. He started his acting journey in 2004. Since then, he has become well-known for his roles in many popular TV shows and movies.
Even though Engin didn't go to a special acting school, he loved writing and drama. He studied history at Ankara University. After graduating, he joined a TV acting contest called Türkiye'nin Yıldızları (Turkey's Stars). He was one of the top stars in the contest. His first main role was as Mustafa Bulut in the show Bir Bulut Olsam. People really noticed his amazing acting in this role.
Engin Akyürek is famous for playing lead characters in many TV series. Some of his well-known roles include Kerim Ilgaz in Fatmagül'ün Suçu Ne?, Ömer Demir in Kara Para Aşk, and Sancar in Sefirin Kızı. For his role as Ömer in Kara Para Aşk, he won the Best Actor award at the Seoul International Drama Awards in 2015. He was also nominated for a top acting award at the International Emmy Awards.
Besides TV shows, Engin Akyürek has also acted in movies. His first movie was Kader, where he played Cevat. He also starred as Tekin in the film Bi Küçük Eylül Meselesi. Early Life and Education
Engin Akyürek was born on October 12, 1981, in Ankara, Turkey. His family comes from a town called Tercan in Erzincan, Turkey. His father worked for the government, and his mother was a homemaker. He also has a younger brother. Engin finished his studies at the Ankara University History Department in 2002. He learned a lot about languages and history there.
Acting Career Highlights
In 2004, two years after finishing university, Engin Akyürek joined the Turkiye’nin Yildizlari (Turkey's Star) TV competition. He won first place in this contest. This win helped him get a supporting role in the TV series Yabancı Damat (2004–2007). In this show, he worked with many experienced actors. He appeared in all 106 episodes and became a familiar face on TV. The show was also popular in Greece.
His first movie role was in Zeki Demirkubuz's Kader (2006). For playing Cevat in this film, Engin Akyürek won the "Most Promising Actor" award in 2006. After that, he played Nizipli Halim in the TV series Karayilan (2007–2008). This story was set in Gaziantep during the French Occupation. Engin then got his first main role as Mustafa Bulut in the Kanal D TV series Bir Bulut Olsam. His powerful acting made the series very popular.
From 2010 to 2012, Akyürek became even more famous. He played the main character, Kerim Ilgaz, in Fatmagül'ün Suçu Ne?. This TV series was about important social topics. He starred alongside his friend from the Türkiye'nin Yıldızları contest, Beren Saat. After a short break, he played the main character, Tekin, in the movie Bi Küçük Eylül Meselesi (2014). This movie was filmed in Bozcaada.
Later, Akyürek returned to TV screens as Ömer Demir in the popular series Kara Para Aşk in 2014. For this role, he won the Best Actor award at the Seoul International Drama Awards (2015). He was also nominated for an International Emmy Award for Best Actor. After Kara Para Aşk, Akyürek took a break. He returned to TV with his next series Ölene Kadar in January 2017.
Akyürek's next projects were movies. The first was Çocuklar Sana Emanet (Children Entrusted to You), released on March 23, 2018. His next movie was Bir Aşk İki Hayat (One Love Two Lives) in 2019. This movie was based on a Greek film. Between 2019 and 2021, Akyürek starred in the TV series Sefirin Kızı (The Ambassador's Daughter). He acted with Neslihan Atagül and later Tuba Büyüküstün in this show.
In 2022, Akyürek starred with Tolga Sarıtaş in the film Yolun Açik Olsun (Godspeed), which was released on Netflix. Akyürek also made his debut on Disney+ with the series Kaçış. He played the lead role opposite İrem Helvacıoğlu. Engin Akyürek himself wrote the story for this series. The first season received good reviews, and people praised his acting and writing. As of 2023, he has a main role in the series Adım Farah with Demet Özdemir. This show has been renewed for a second season because it became very popular around the world.
