Englewood, South Dakota facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Englewood is a small place in South Dakota, USA. It's not a city or town with its own government. Instead, it's called an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses in Lawrence County that are part of the larger county area.

A Look Back: The History of Englewood

Englewood has an interesting past, starting long ago in the late 1800s.

From Ranch to Railroad Stop

Englewood wasn't always called Englewood. At first, it was known as Ten-Mile Ranch. This was a busy spot in the 1870s. It served as a stagecoach stop. Imagine horse-drawn carriages, called stagecoaches, carrying people and mail across the country. They would stop at places like Ten-Mile Ranch to rest, change horses, and let passengers eat.

Later, the area became important for trains. When it turned into a railroad center, its name changed to Englewood. This meant trains would stop there, bringing more people and goods.

The Post Office and Its Name

A post office opened in Englewood in 1892. This was a big deal because it meant people could send and receive mail right there. The post office stayed open for many years, finally closing in 1943.

It's believed that Englewood got its name from a much larger place: Englewood, Chicago. Sometimes, new communities were named after places people came from or admired.
