Enric Galwey i Garcia (born 1864 – died 1931) was a Spanish painter. He was known for his beautiful landscape paintings. He is often linked to the Olot school of landscape painting.

About Enric Galwey's Life

Enric Galwey was born in Barcelona, Spain. His family had English roots. He started learning art at the Escola de la Llotja. This was an important art school in Barcelona.

Early Art Training

In 1885, Enric went to Olot. He wanted to improve his painting skills. He studied with Joaquim Vayreda, a famous landscape painter. That same year, Enric showed his watercolor paintings in Barcelona. This was his first art exhibition.

Studying Art in Paris

By 1889, Enric felt his paintings were a bit stiff. He decided to travel to Paris, France. There, he studied the works of artists like Rousseau and Corot. These artists were part of the Barbizon school. They were known for painting nature outdoors.

While in Paris, Enric also saw the first big Impressionist art show. Impressionism was a new style of painting. It focused on capturing light and movement. This new style greatly influenced Enric's own art.

Returning to Barcelona

Enric came back to Barcelona in 1890. He held an art show at the Sala Parés. His paintings were well-received by art critics. He then opened his own art studio in the center of Barcelona.

He kept visiting Olot often until his teacher, Vayreda, passed away. For the rest of his life, Enric also frequently visited Valldemossa in Mallorca. He first showed his art at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1895. He won second place there in 1897.

Art Societies and Later Life

Enric Galwey helped start a group called the "Societat Artística i Literària de Catalunya." He founded it with Modest Urgell and Lluís Graner. This group was for artists, writers, and art collectors. They did not agree with the Modernisme art movement.

From 1900 to 1926, their society held art shows every year at the Sala Parés. Enric was also an active member of the Cercle Artístic de Sant Lluc. This was another important art group. Enric Galwey passed away in Barcelona in 1931.

In 1934, a short book of his memories was published. It was called El que he vist a can Parés en els darrers quaranta anys: memòries d'Enric Galwey.
