Enrique Barón Crespo (born March 27, 1944) is a well-known Spanish politician. He is also an expert in economics and law. He was a member of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party and served in the European Parliament until 2009. He even became the President of the European Parliament.

Early Life and Education
Enrique Barón studied law at the University of Madrid. He also studied business administration at ICADE in Madrid and ESSEC in Paris. He finished these studies in 1965.
After his studies, he worked as a lawyer. He focused on helping people with problems at work, which is called labour law. He also helped people who were involved in political cases between 1970 and 1977.
A Career in Spanish Politics
Enrique Barón was a member of the Cortes from 1977 to 1987. The Cortes is like the Spanish Parliament. He represented the Madrid region.
From 1982 to 1985, he was the Minister of Transport, Tourism and Communications. During this time, he suggested closing many railway lines. This idea was based on reports that did not fully show how important these lines were.
Leading the European Parliament
In 1985, Enrique Barón stopped being a minister. He became a member of the European Parliament. This happened after Spain joined the European Union (EU) in 1986. At that time, it was called the European Community (EC).
In 1987, he tried to become the President of the European Parliament. He lost by only five votes to Charles Henry Plumb from Britain. But on July 25, 1989, he was elected President on his very first try. He was the youngest person to hold this important job.
He served as President for two and a half years. This is a common length of time for this role in the European Parliament. After his time as President, he was the chairman of the PES Group from 1999 to 2004. He also led the Committee on Foreign Affairs from 1992 to 1995.
Other Important Roles
Enrique Barón is a member of the Global Panel Foundation's Board of Advisors. He is also on the Advisory Board of Gold Mercury International, a think tank in London.
He actively helps with Gold Mercury's Brand EU project. This project works to improve how the European Union is seen and understood. It also checks on the EU's progress.
