Enrique Barón Crespo (born on March 27, 1944) is a Spanish politician, economist, and lawyer. He is a member of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party and was part of the European Parliament until 2009. He belonged to the Party of European Socialists group.

Early Life and Education
Enrique Barón studied law at the University of Madrid. He also studied business administration at ICADE in Madrid and ESSEC in Paris. He finished these studies in 1965.
As a lawyer, he focused on helping people with work-related legal issues. He also helped people who were involved in political legal cases between 1970 and 1977.
Political Career in Spain
Barón Crespo was elected as a representative (called a Deputy) for the Madrid area. He served in the Spanish Parliament (the Cortes) from 1977 to 1987.
From 1982 to 1985, he was a government minister. He was in charge of the Ministry of Transport, Tourism and Communications.
Role in the European Parliament
In 1985, Barón Crespo left his role as a minister. He became a member of the European Parliament after Spain joined the European Union (EU) in 1986. At that time, the EU was known as the European Community (EC).
Becoming President of the European Parliament
In 1987, he tried to become the President of the European Parliament. He lost by only five votes to his British opponent, Charles Henry Plumb.
However, on July 25, 1989, he was elected President of the European Parliament. He was the youngest person to hold this important position at the time. He served for two and a half years, which is a common term for this role.
Other Important Roles
After being President, he continued to play important roles. From 1992 to 1995, he was the Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs. This committee deals with how the European Union works with other countries.
He also led the Party of European Socialists (PES) group. He was their chairman from November 1, 1999, to July 15, 2004.
Later Activities
Enrique Barón Crespo is a member of the Board of Advisors for the Global Panel Foundation. He is also on the Advisory Board of Gold Mercury International, a think tank in London, UK.
He is actively involved in the Brand EU initiative. This project aims to improve how the European Union is seen and promoted around the world.
In March 2008, he met with the Italian President Giorgio Napolitano. This meeting happened after a concert celebrating the 60th anniversary of an Italian company called Finmeccanica.
