Early Years and Family

Enrique came from a family of artists. His father, Salvador Martínez Cubells, was a painter and art restorer. He taught Enrique his first lessons in art. His grandfather, Francisco Martínez Yago, was also a painter.

Enrique went to special art schools in Spain. He studied at the Escuela Especial de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado. He also attended the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. Some of his teachers were famous artists like Emilio Sala and Antonio Muñoz Degrain.

Travels and New Ideas

In 1899, Enrique moved to Germany and lived in Munich. From there, he traveled all over Europe. He kept learning about art from other painters, like Heinrich von Zügel. He was also inspired by the works of Wilhelm Leibl.

During this time, Enrique started to focus on painting scenes of the sea, everyday life, and portraits. These interests became even stronger after 1903. That's when he visited the Netherlands and saw the art of the Hague School. This group of Dutch painters often showed realistic scenes of nature and daily life.

Teaching and Recognition

When Enrique returned to Spain, he became a professor. He taught at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios [es]. He also taught at his old school, the Real Academia. Later, he became an important member of the Academia.

Enrique showed his paintings in many exhibitions. He won several awards at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. He earned prizes in 1897, 1899, and 1901. He won first-place awards in 1904 for his painting "Work, Rest and Family" and in 1912 for "Return from the Catch."

He also won gold medals at big international shows. These included the Exposición Internacional de Buenos Aires in 1910 and the Exposición Nacional de Panamá in 1916. These awards encouraged him to visit America. Overall, he took part in more than forty international art shows!

Later Life and Legacy

After his father passed away in 1914, Enrique continued to build his art collection. It became one of the most important private art collections in Spain.

He received many special honors for his work. These included the Civil Order of Alfonso XII and the Order of Isabella the Catholic. He also received the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown from Germany.

You can see some of his most well-known paintings at the Carmen Thyssen Museum. In 2003, a large exhibition of his art was held in Zaragoza, Spain.
