Enrique Molina Garmendia (born August 4, 1871, in La Serena, Chile – died March 8, 1964, in Concepción, Chile) was a very important Chilean educator and philosopher. He worked hard to improve education in Chile. He especially wanted to spread education beyond the capital city, Santiago. His greatest achievement was starting the University of Concepción. This was the third oldest university in Chile. It was also the first major university built outside Santiago. Many people consider him one of the most important teachers and thinkers of his time.

During his life, Enrique Molina received many special awards. These included an honorary doctorate from the University of Chile. He was also named Honorary University President for Life at the University of Concepción.

Enrique Molina's Big Ideas for Education

Enrique Molina Garmendia believed that education should be available to everyone. He thought it was important for learning to happen all over Chile, not just in Santiago. This idea is called decentralization of education. It means spreading schools and universities out to different parts of the country.

Founding the University of Concepción

In 1956, he was named the rector of the University of Concepción for life. This was a very special honor. In 1959, a famous artist named Samuel Román created a monument for him. This monument is called Tribute to the Spirit of the Founders of the University of Concepción. It stands at the University of Concepción today. In the same year, he also received an honorary doctorate from the University of Chile.
