Enrique Orizaola Velázquez (born March 26, 1922 – died June 10, 2013) was a Spanish football player and later a well-known coach. He is remembered for his long career in Spanish football, especially for leading FC Barcelona to an important European final.
Playing Career
Enrique Orizaola was born in Santander, a city in Spain. He started his football journey as a player. He played as a Midfielder, which is a position in the middle of the field.
His main team was Racing de Santander, where he played for many years. He also played for Gimnástica Torrelavega for a couple of seasons.
Coaching Career
After his playing days, Orizaola became a football coach. He managed many different teams across Spain. His coaching career was much longer than his playing career.
Leading FC Barcelona
One of the most famous parts of his coaching career was when he managed FC Barcelona. This happened at the start of 1961. He took over the team after the previous coach left.
Under his guidance, FC Barcelona reached the final of the European Cup. This was a very big deal because it was the first time in the club's history they had reached this final.
The final match was against SL Benfica. It was a very close game, but Barcelona unfortunately lost 3-2. Even though they didn't win, reaching the final was a huge achievement for the team and for Orizaola.
