Club History

Real Jaén started as Jaén Football Club in 1922. In 1929, it was renamed Sociedad Olímpica Jiennense. The club changed its name to Real Jaén Club de Fútbol in 1947.

The team first joined a national league in 1943. They were promoted to the Tercera Division. This was Spain's third football division at the time. Real Jaén quickly became a strong team. They often finished in the top four.

Reaching La Liga

After nine seasons in the Tercera Division, the team moved up. The "Lizards," as they are nicknamed, were promoted to the Segunda Division in 1952. This was Spain's second division. Real Jaén continued their great performance. They won the southern group of the 1952–53 Segunda Division season. This meant they were promoted to La Liga for the very first time!

During that amazing season, they won all their home games. One big win was 9–0 against Granada CF.

In their first season in La Liga (1953–54), Real Jaén finished 14th. They won 11 games, drew 6, and lost 13. This put them in a special relegation group. They finished last in that group and were sent back down. They had only played one season in the top league.

Back to the Top and Down Again

After being relegated in 1954, some key players left the team. The next season, Jaén finished 7th. But the season after that was much better! They won the southern group of the Segunda Division again in 1955–56. This meant Real Jaén was going back to La Liga!

In their second season in the top league, Jaén just avoided being relegated. They finished 14th, one point above Deportivo de La Coruña. This meant they stayed in Spain's top football league.

However, their third season in La Liga was not as good. The team finished last with only 20 points. Real Jaén was relegated after two years in La Liga. A big moment that season was a 1–0 home win against the powerful team FC Barcelona.

Later Years and Recent Seasons

After being relegated for the second time, Real Jaén found it hard to return to La Liga. Their best season after that was 1959–60. They finished 3rd in the Segunda Division. They were only two points behind Cordoba CF, which meant they almost made it to the promotion playoffs.

After the 1962–63 season, the "Lizards" were relegated to the Tercera Division. This was the first time they played there since 1952. For the next 12 seasons, Jaén only returned to the Segunda Division once, in 1967. But they were immediately relegated again.

They returned to the second tier in 1976. They stayed there for three seasons until 1979. Then they were relegated to the new Segunda Division B. This was the new third tier in Spanish football. Jaén stayed in the third level until 1986. Then the team was relegated to the Tercera Division again, which was now the fourth tier. For many years, they moved between the Segunda B and the Tercera.

In 1997, the team returned to the Segunda Division. This was their first time there since 1979. The 1997–98 season was tough. They finished last and went back to the Segunda B. Real Jaén returned to the Segunda in 2000. They finished 10th in the 2000–01 season. But they finished last the next season and were relegated again.

The next 11 seasons were spent in the Segunda B. In 2013, Jaén returned to the Segunda Division once more. The "Lizards" finished second to last, in 21st place. This meant they were relegated again.

In 2017, Jaén finished 19th in the Segunda B. They were relegated to the Tercera Division. This was their first time in the fourth tier since 1991. In the 4th level, the club finished 3rd in the 2017–18 season. They stayed in that category. On July 5, 2019, Alberto González became the new coach for the 2019–20 season.
