Xerez Club Deportivo S. A. D. is a Spanish football club from the city of Jerez de la Frontera. It was started in 1947 and is known by its fans as Xerecistas. The team plays in Tercera Federación – Group 10.

Club History

Football first came to Jerez de la Frontera in the late 1800s. This was because of the strong links between Jerez and the United Kingdom, mainly due to the export of sherry wine. In the early 1900s, Sir Thomas Spencer, who worked for a local winery, started the Sociedad Jerez Foot-Ball Club. He was also the team's chairman, player, and captain!

The club had a few different names between 1942 and 1947, finally becoming Jerez Club Deportivo. In the 1960s, it changed to its current name, Xerez Club Deportivo. The team first reached the second division in the 1953–54 season and stayed there for five years.

The team's current stadium, Estadio Municipal de Chapín, opened on July 10, 1988. It replaced their old stadium, Estadio Domecq. The very first game played there was a friendly match against Real Madrid.

After many years playing in the second and third divisions, Xerez almost made it to La Liga (the top division) in the 2001–02 season. They were doing great all season, but then lost form and didn't get promoted.

However, the 2008–09 season was amazing! Xerez stayed at the top of the league. On June 13, 2009, they beat SD Huesca 2-1 at home. This win meant they were promoted to the top division for the first time ever! They even won the league title on the final day after a draw against Celta de Vigo.

Their first season in La Liga was short. They were relegated (moved down a division) after only one year. Even though they improved a lot in the second half of the season, it wasn't enough to stay up.

In the years that followed, Xerez faced serious money problems. This led to the team being relegated again, eventually dropping to the fourth division in 2013. Because of these issues, some fans started a new club called Xerez Deportivo FC.

In the 2023–24 season, Xerez C.D. fought for promotion to the Segunda RFEF. The team broke a record by not letting any goals in during the first 9 games of the league. Xerez also managed to bring back many old fans and had almost 9,000 people watching their games in the fifth division of Spanish football.

Club Symbols

Team Crest

The crest (logo) of Xerez CD was designed in the summer of 1947 by Mariano Aricha de Vicente. It looks a lot like the city of Jerez's own badge, using the same colors.

The crest is split into two parts by a white stripe. In the top left, you can see blue waves on a silver (white) background, which is a main part of Jerez's city shield. In the bottom right, the letters C and D are linked together in white on a blue background. The crest also has a crown with five points, just like the city's shield.

The white stripe has "XEREZ" written in blue. When it was first designed, it said "JEREZ". But on August 21, 1962, the chairman, Pablo Porro Guerrero, decided to change the "J" to an "X". This was to bring back the old spelling "XEREZ" from the club's past, Xerez FC.

The crest was updated again in the 2000s. The blue color was made a bit lighter so it would stand out more on the dark blue team uniforms. In May 2017, the rights to the crest and the name "Xerez Club Deportivo" became owned by a fan group called Afición Xerecista.

In September 2020, the club updated the crest's design again. They removed the black lines to make it look cleaner and more modern. They also made different versions of the crest to work well in various places.

Team Stadiums

Since the 2013-14 season, Xerez has sometimes had trouble playing its home games in Jerez de la Frontera. This is because of rules from the City Council about using municipal sports facilities.

Because of this, Xerez has trained and played its home games in different fields around the province. Sometimes they play in Jerez at stadiums like La Juventud, La Canaleja, La Granja, El Torno, or Picadueñas. During the 2017-18 season, Xerez played in seven different stadiums! Currently, they play their home games at the Municipal de Chapín.

Chapín Stadium

The Estadio Municipal de Chapín was the main home for Xerez from 1998 to 2014. It opened in 1988 and can hold 20,523 people. The first game played there was between Xerez C.D. and Real Madrid. The field itself is 105 by 68 meters.

One of the most popular stands for fans was "Preferencia". The "Tribuna" stand was often used by well-known people from Jerez and also has the VIP boxes and radio booths. The "Fondo Sur" stand was known for its great atmosphere. The stadium also has athletics tracks around the field, which can make it a bit harder for fans to see the game clearly from the stands.

Other Stadiums Used

Before Chapín opened in 1988, the team played at the Domecq Stadium. This area is now a residential park called Parque Stadium.

During the 2001-02 season, while Chapín was being updated for the 2002 equestrian games, Xerez played in other stadiums. These included the "El Palmar Stadium" in Sanlúcar de Barrameda and "Bahía Sur" in San Fernando. After the updates, they returned to Jerez, first playing at the improved Estadio de la Juventud and then back at Chapín.

Team Uniforms

Xerez CD's main uniform has always been a blue shirt, white shorts, and blue socks. Their away uniform usually has a white shirt and socks with blue shorts. The third uniform changes the most and has been black, pink, wine-colored, green, or orange over the years.
