Enrique Fernández Romero (born on June 23, 1971) is a Spanish retired football player. He played as a left-back, which is a defender who plays on the left side of the field.
Romero played for four different clubs during his 16-year career. He is best known for his time at Deportivo de La Coruña. He helped them win four major titles, including their only La Liga championship. La Liga is the top football league in Spain.
He played a total of 396 games in the top division and scored 14 goals. Romero also represented Spain at the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
Club Career
Enrique Romero was born in Jerez de la Frontera, a city in Spain. He started his professional football journey with CD Logroñés. In his first two seasons, he played only a few games in La Liga. However, in the 1993–94 season, he became a regular player. His team managed to stay in the top division that year.
After playing for Valencia CF and RCD Mallorca, Romero joined Deportivo de La Coruña in 1998. At both Valencia and Mallorca, he always played in at least 30 league matches each season.
At Deportivo, Romero became a very strong attacking left-back. He played 50 matches in the UEFA Champions League for the team from Galicia. In the 1999–2000 season, he played 34 games and scored one goal. This was a special year because Depor won its first national championship!
In the summer of 2006, Romero moved to Real Betis. He had been replaced at Deportivo by a younger player, Joan Capdevila. Even though Romero was a very dependable defender, sometimes playing as a central defender, he decided to move on.
He played only one season with Betis. A new player, Fernando Vega, started playing more often. So, Romero decided to retire from professional football at age 36. He had played in over 500 official matches during his career. Almost 400 of those were in Spain's top division.
International Career
Romero played ten times for the Spanish national team. In football, playing for your country is called earning a "cap." His first game for Spain was on February 23, 2000. It was a friendly match against Croatia in Split.
He was chosen to represent Spain at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan and South Korea. He played in three matches during the tournament. Spain reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup that year.
