About the Alto Tambo Woodlizard
This interesting lizard is found only in a specific part of the world. It lives in the tropical northwestern Andes mountains in Ecuador. When a species is found only in one place, it's called endemic. So, the Alto Tambo woodlizard is endemic to this region.
Where It Lives
The lizard gets its name from where it was first discovered. This place is called Alto Tambo, located in the Esmeraldas Province of Ecuador. Scientists call the place where a new species is first found its "type locality."
What Makes It Special?
The Alto Tambo woodlizard has some unique features that help scientists tell it apart from other similar lizards.
- Its back scales are very smooth and all about the same size.
- It has a brown iris, which is the colored part of its eye.
- Unlike some other lizards, it doesn't have round or ridged (keeled) scales on its sides. These differences help experts identify this specific species.
