The Epithelantha micromeris is a special kind of cactus. People often call it a "button cactus." You can find it growing in places like Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and parts of northeast Mexico.
This cactus looks quite unique. It has a round, globe-shaped stem. Its stem is covered in many white-grey spines. These spines grow so close together that the cactus looks completely grey. It's hard to see the green color of the plant underneath!
A button cactus is quite small. It usually grows to be about 1 to 5 centimeters (0.4 to 2 inches) tall. It is also about 2 to 4 centimeters (0.8 to 1.6 inches) wide.
Flowers and Fruit
The E. micromeris cactus produces tiny flowers. These flowers are usually pink-white. They are known for being some of the smallest flowers you'll see on any cacti.
After the flowers bloom, they turn into a bright red fruit. This fruit is shaped like a cylinder. Inside the fruit, you will find several black seeds. The good news is that this fruit is safe to eat!
Where it Grows
This interesting cactus is native to North America. It thrives in dry, desert-like areas. You can find it in the southwestern United States. It also grows in certain regions of Mexico.
