Epperson, California facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Epperson was once a small community, or a "settlement," located in Colusa County, California. It was about 4 miles (6.4 km) south of another place called Leesville.

Epperson had its own post office for many years, from 1878 until 1899. A post office was a very important place in a community back then, as it was where people sent and received letters and packages. The settlement was named after its very first postmaster, a person named Brutus Clay Epperson, who was in charge of the post office.

What Was a Settlement Like Epperson?

A settlement is a small community or a group of homes and buildings where people live. Many settlements like Epperson grew up around important services, such as a post office or a general store. When the post office closed in 1899, it often meant that fewer people were living there, or that the community had moved or changed. Today, Epperson is no longer an active town, but its history reminds us of the many small places that helped build California.
