This portrait was made to hang in the Hall of Realms. This hall was once part of the Buen Retiro Palace in Madrid, Spain. Today, you can see this painting at the Prado Museum.

King Philip IV asked for this portrait to be painted. He was the son of Philip III. The painting was meant to decorate the Hall of Realms at the Buen Retiro Palace.
Part of a Royal Series
This painting was not the only one made for the Hall of Realms. It was part of a group of equestrian portraits. These included paintings of Philip III's wife, Queen Margaret. There were also portraits of Philip IV, Isabella of France, and Prince Baltasar Carlos. Velázquez's art studio likely helped a lot with creating this painting.
