Eremalche exilis is a type of flowering plant in the mallow family. People often call it white mallow or desert mallow. This plant grows naturally in Baja California, Mexico, and the southwestern parts of the United States. You can find it in dry, desert areas and other places with scrubby plants.
What Does White Mallow Look Like?
The white mallow is an annual herb, which means it lives for only one growing season. It usually grows low to the ground, spreading out with stems that can reach up to about 40 centimeters (about 16 inches) long. These stems are often covered in small hairs.
Leaves and Flowers
The leaves of the white mallow are usually about 2.5 centimeters (1 inch) long. They have three to five rounded parts, called lobes, which might have small teeth at their tips.
The plant produces single flowers that grow from where the leaves meet the stem. Each flower looks like a small cup and is usually less than 1 centimeter (0.4 inches) wide. The flowers can be white, pink, or a very light purple color.
Fruit and Flowering Time
After the flowers bloom, the plant produces a disc-shaped fruit. This fruit is divided into up to 13 small sections. White mallow typically flowers from late winter into the spring months.
