Eremites Friary, Bristol facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Eremites Friary was an old religious building in Bristol, England. It was a home for a group of friars called the Brothers Eremites of St. Augustine. This small community was started way back in 1320. Today, there are no parts of the friary left to see.

What Was Eremites Friary?

A friary was a special kind of religious house. It was a place where friars lived and worked. Friars are like monks, but they often lived among regular people in towns and cities. They would preach and help others, instead of staying mostly separate from the world.

The Brothers Eremites of St. Augustine

The friars at Eremites Friary belonged to a group called the Brothers Eremites of St. Augustine. An "Eremite" is someone who lives a very simple and often quiet religious life. This order followed the teachings of Saint Augustine, an important Christian thinker from long ago. They had a small "convent," which is another word for a religious community's home.

Its Beginning in Bristol

Eremites Friary was founded in the year 1320. It was started by two important people, Sir Simon Montacute and Sir William Montacute. They were likely wealthy knights or landowners who wanted to support a religious community in their area. The friary was located in Bristol, near a place called Temple Gate. This was an important part of the city at the time.

What Happened to the Friary?

Sadly, Eremites Friary no longer exists. Many old religious buildings in England were closed down centuries ago, especially during a time known as the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 1500s. After being closed, many of these buildings fell into ruin or were taken apart for their materials. Today, there is no sign that Eremites Friary ever stood in Bristol.
