Eric John facts for kids
Eric John (1922–2000) was an important history expert at the University of Manchester in England. He was especially good at studying Anglo-Saxon history. This is the history of the Anglo-Saxons, who lived in England a very long time ago.
Another famous historian, James Campbell, said that Eric John was one of the most important and interesting Anglo-Saxon historians. He made people think deeply about the past.

Eric John: A Historian's Story
Eric John was born in 1922 and lived until 2000. He spent his career teaching and researching history. His main focus was the Anglo-Saxon period. This time in history covers roughly the years 450 to 1066 in England. It was a time of kings, battles, and the start of many English traditions.
What Did Eric John Study?
Eric John was very interested in the English Benedictine Reform. This was a big movement in the 900s. It aimed to improve the way monasteries and churches worked in England. He wrote a lot about this in his book Orbis Britanniae.
His ideas were seen as very "stimulating and provocative." This means they made other historians think and discuss. Even if they didn't agree with everything he said, they knew he brought new and important ideas to the study of history.

Remembering Eric John
After Eric John passed away, a book was written to honor him. This book was called Edward the Elder 899-924 (published in 2001). It was dedicated to his life and all the important work he did as a historian.
