Eric Studesville, born on May 29, 1967, is a well-known American football coach. He currently works for the Miami Dolphins in the National Football League (NFL) as their associate head coach and running backs coach. Studesville was also an interim (temporary) head coach for the Denver Broncos for four weeks in 2010. He was the first African American head coach in the Broncos' history.
Studesville has been to the Super Bowl twice with the Broncos. His team lost in 2014 but won Super Bowl 50 in 2016. Since 2018, he has been an assistant coach for the Miami Dolphins. He mainly coaches running backs and was promoted to associate head coach in 2022.

Coaching Journey in Football
Eric Studesville started his coaching career in 1991. He began as an assistant coach at the University of Arizona.
Early College Coaching Roles
- 1992-1993: Studesville worked as a video coordinator and assistant coach for the University of North Carolina.
- 1994: He became the defensive coordinator for Wingate University. His defense was very strong, allowing only 15.7 points per game. This helped the team achieve an 8–2 record and reach the third round of the playoffs.
- 1995-1996: Studesville continued as a defensive coordinator at Kent State University.
Starting in the NFL
In 1997, Studesville joined the Chicago Bears as a quality control coach. This was his first job in the NFL. He stayed with the Bears until the end of the 2000 season.
Coaching Running Backs: New York Giants (2001–2003)
In 2001, Studesville became the running backs coach for the New York Giants. Before he arrived, the Giants had played in Super Bowl XXXV. Studesville helped running back Tiki Barber have three great seasons in a row, each with over 1,000 rushing yards. In 2002, Barber gained 1,554 rushing yards, which was one of the best totals in Giants history.
Coaching Running Backs: Buffalo Bills (2004–2009)
After leaving the Giants, Studesville joined the Buffalo Bills in 2004 as their running backs coach.
- 2004: The Bills had a winning season with a 9–7 record. Studesville helped Willis McGahee become a star running back, gaining 1,297 yards.
- 2005: McGahee continued to shine, gaining 1,425 yards, even though the team had a tougher season.
- 2007: The Bills drafted Marshawn Lynch, who gained 1,299 yards in his first year under Studesville's coaching. Fred Jackson also started to become an important player for the team.
- 2008: Lynch and Jackson combined for over 2,200 yards, showing how strong the Bills' running game was.
- 2009: Fred Jackson led the team with 1,433 yards. Studesville left the Bills after this season.
Denver Broncos and Super Bowl Win (2010–2017)
In January 2010, Studesville was hired by the Denver Broncos as their running backs coach.
Interim Head Coach Role
On December 6, 2010, the Broncos' head coach was fired. Studesville was chosen to be the interim (temporary) head coach for the last four games of the season. During this time, the team won one game and lost three. Studesville earned his first win as a head coach on December 26, 2010, when the Broncos beat the Houston Texans.
Super Bowl 50 Champion
Studesville continued as the running backs coach for the Broncos under several different head coaches. On February 7, 2016, he was part of the Broncos coaching staff that won Super Bowl 50. The Broncos defeated the Carolina Panthers with a score of 24–10. Studesville left the Broncos on January 1, 2018.
Miami Dolphins (2018–Present)
On January 17, 2018, the Miami Dolphins hired Studesville as their running backs coach. He had previously worked with the Dolphins' head coach, Adam Gase, in Denver. Studesville has remained with the Dolphins through several coaching changes. On March 11, 2021, he also received the title of co-offensive coordinator. Since 2022, he has been the associate head coach and running backs coach for the Dolphins.
