Erich Probst (born December 5, 1927 – died March 16, 1988) was a talented Austrian footballer. He was known as a great striker, which means he was very good at scoring goals. Erich played for many different teams in Vienna, Austria, and also in other countries.

Erich Probst's Football Journey
Erich Probst began his football journey at a young age. He joined the Admira Wien team when he was just 17 years old. After playing for First Vienna F.C. for a year, he moved to SK Rapid Wien. This was a very successful time for him!
Winning Championships with Rapid Wien
While playing for Rapid Wien, Erich helped his team win the Austrian Championship four times. In his very first season with Rapid, he scored an amazing 28 goals in just 23 matches. Even though he was always one of the top scorers, he never scored the most goals in the league during a single season.
Playing Abroad and Return to Austria
After his time with Rapid Wien, Erich went to Germany to play for Wuppertaler SV. When Wuppertal's team moved down a league, he then went to Switzerland. There, he played for FC Zürich.
In the winter of 1959, Erich came back to Austria. He joined SV Austria Salzburg. The club paid 90,000 Austrian schillings for him. This was the highest amount ever paid for a player in Austria at that time! He scored 15 goals, which helped the team stay in the top league. During his time with Salzburg, he also played his last game for the national football team. He was the very first player from SV Austria Salzburg to ever play for the Austrian national team.
Later Career and Coaching
In the 1960-1961 season, Erich Probst tried being a coach for SV Austria Salzburg. However, it wasn't very successful. So, he decided to go back to playing as a striker again. His last clubs were SAK 1914 in Salzburg and First Vienna FC in Vienna. Overall, he scored 150 goals in Austria's top football league.
Playing for Austria's National Team
Erich Probst played 19 times for the Austrian national football team. He scored 17 goals for his country. His first match was on May 27, 1951, when Austria won 4-0 against Scotland.
1954 FIFA World Cup Success
Erich was a key player in the qualification match for the 1954 FIFA World Cup. He scored 5 goals in a huge 9-1 win against Portugal! He was also part of the Austrian team that reached third place in the 1954 FIFA World Cup. During that tournament, he scored six goals. This made him one of the top scorers, tied for second place with Max Morlock from Germany and Josef Hügi from Switzerland.
While Erich was playing for clubs in other countries, he wasn't part of the national team. But in 1960, he played his last match for Austria against France. Austria lost 2-4, but Erich scored his final goal for the team in that game. He was a true legend for Austrian football!
