She chose her pen name, Erick Berry, from her interest in an artist named Eric Pape and her first husband's last name.

Erick Berry's Career as a Writer and Artist

Erick Berry published many books for children from the 1930s to the 1960s. She worked as an author, an illustrator, and an editor. This means she wrote stories, drew pictures for books, and helped prepare other people's books for publishing.

Her Most Famous Books and Awards

One of her most popular books was Winged Girl of Knossos, published in 1933. She not only wrote this book but also drew all the pictures for it. This book won a special award called a Newbery Honor in 1934.

In the same year, another book she illustrated, The Apprentice of Florence by Anne Dempster Kyle, also won a Newbery Honor. She also drew pictures for several books written by her husband, Herbert Best. One of these, Garram the Hunter: A Boy of the Hill Tribes, also received a Newbery Honor.
