Erin Shirreff was born in 1975 in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. She studied art at the University of Victoria, where she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Later, she went to the Yale University School of Art. There, she earned her Masters of Fine Arts degree, focusing on sculpture.
