History of White Cube

How it Started

White Cube was created by an art dealer named Jay Jopling. He first opened the gallery in May 1993. It was a small, square room on Duke Street in St James's, London. This street is known for its many art dealers.

At this first location, there was a special rule. An artist could only show their work there one time. White Cube became well-known because it was the first gallery to give solo shows to many Young British Artists (YBAs). Famous artists like Tracey Emin and Gavin Turk had their first big shows there.

Hoxton Square Gallery (2000-2012)

In April 2000, White Cube moved to a bigger building at 48 Hoxton Square. This building was built in the 1920s. Later, in 2002, two more floors were added to the building. This made the gallery much larger.

The Hoxton and Shoreditch areas were popular with the Young British Artists in the 1990s. These areas used to be old industrial places. Now, they have many new clubs, restaurants, and media businesses. Hoxton Square is a nice spot with grass and trees in the middle.

When White Cube had new art shows, many people would come. Crowds would often fill Hoxton Square. Inside, the gallery had a large main exhibition area. There was also a smaller space upstairs that often showed a different artist. White Cube Hoxton Square closed at the end of 2012.

New Galleries in London

In September 2006, White Cube opened a second gallery in London. This one is at 25–26 Mason's Yard, close to the original Duke Street location. This new gallery was the first new building in the St James's area in over 30 years. It was designed by MRJ Rundell & Associates.

In October 2011, White Cube Bermondsey opened. This building used to be a warehouse from the 1970s. It was changed into a huge art space. With over 5,000 square meters of space, it became one of Europe's largest commercial art galleries when it opened.

White Cube Around the World

White Cube Hong Kong opened in March 2012. It is located at 50 Connaught Road in the heart of Hong Kong. This was the first White Cube gallery outside the United Kingdom. Many famous artists have shown their work there, including Gilbert & George and Damien Hirst. The gallery has two floors with high ceilings.

White Cube São Paulo opened in December 2012 in Brazil. It was in a changed warehouse in the city center. The gallery hosted shows by artists like Tracey Emin and Anselm Kiefer. This gallery closed in 2015.

In 2018, White Cube opened an office in Manhattan, New York. People could visit by making an appointment. In 2019, the gallery also started a presence in Paris, France. By 2023, White Cube announced plans for a new space in Seoul, South Korea. This gallery is in the same building as the Horim Art Centre, which has a large collection of Korean art. White Cube opened a public gallery on Madison Avenue in Manhattan in October 2023.
