About Nevada City Buckwheat
This plant is a small shrub. It usually grows to be about half a meter (or about 1.5 feet) tall. It can stand up straight or grow in a low, bushy clump. Its leaves are oval-shaped and feel a bit woolly.
What it Looks Like
The Nevada City buckwheat has thin stems that hold up rounded clusters of bright yellow flowers. These flowers make the plant look very pretty when it's blooming.
Where it Grows
You can only find the Nevada City buckwheat in California. It grows in different spots across the Sierra Nevada mountains and the hills nearby. These groups of plants are spread out, not all in one big area.
Different Types of Nevada City Buckwheat
There are two main types, or "varieties," of this plant:
- The most common type is called var. prattenianum. It grows in many places in the mountains and foothills.
- The other type is var. avium. This one is rarer. It only grows on granite rocks in the Sierra Nevada mountains in Madera and Fresno Counties. This type is usually smaller than the more common one.
