Erith and Crayford was a special area in the UK that chose one person to represent them in Parliament. This person is called a Member of Parliament, or MP for short. MPs work in the House of Commons, which is part of the UK's Parliament.
This special area was created for the general election in 1955. It stopped being a separate area for elections in 1997. After that, it was split into two new areas: Erith & Thamesmead and Bexleyheath & Crayford.
For its last 32 years, Erith and Crayford was part of the London Borough of Bexley in south-east London. But for its first ten years, it was in Kent. It was divided into two smaller council districts there.
Understanding Constituency Boundaries
A constituency is like a special zone on a map. People living in that zone vote for their MP. The boundaries of these zones can change over time. This happens to make sure each MP represents about the same number of people.
How the Boundaries Changed
From 1955 to 1974, the Erith and Crayford area included the Municipal Borough of Erith. It also included the Urban District of Crayford. These were local government areas at the time.
Between 1974 and 1983, the boundaries changed. It then covered specific parts, or "wards," of the London Borough of Bexley. These wards were Belvedere, Bostall, Crayford North, Crayford Town, Crayford West, Erith Town, and Northumberland Heath.
From 1983 until it was abolished in 1997, the boundaries changed again. The area included the Bexley wards of Belvedere, Bostall, Crayford, Erith, North End, Northumberland Heath, and Thamesmead East.
