Ernesto Alonso was a famous Mexican actor, producer, and director. He was born on February 28, 1917, and passed away on August 7, 2007. People often called him "El Señor Telenovela" which means "Mr. Soap Opera." This was because he created and worked on so many popular telenovelas, which are like long TV dramas, known all over the world.

Ernesto Alonso: An Acting Star

Ernesto Alonso started his acting journey in 1938. His first role was a small part in a movie called La Zandunga. He then appeared in "Papacito Lindo" in 1939. Throughout the 1940s, his fame grew as he starred in many films. Some of these included "La Gallina Culeca" and "Historia de una gran Amor." He even acted alongside his brother, Alfonso Ramírez Alonso, in "El Precio de la Gloria."

In the 1950s, Ernesto continued to make movies. He was the narrator for the film Los Olvidados (1950) and played the main character in Ensayo de un crimen (1955). Both of these movies were directed by the famous Luis Buñuel.

It was in the 1960s that Ernesto began acting in telenovelas. His very first one was "Cartas de amor" in 1960. He often worked with actress Jacqueline Andere in both films and telenovelas. One of his most memorable roles was as Enrique de Martino in the 1983 telenovela El Maleficio. In this show, he played a very powerful and mysterious character. His last acting role was in the telenovela Entre el Amor y el Odio in 2002, where he played Father Abad.

Behind the Scenes: Directing and Producing

Ernesto Alonso was not just an actor; he was also a talented director and producer. Sometimes, he would even direct, produce, and star in his own telenovelas all at once! His first time directing was for "Espejo de Sombras" in 1960, which he also produced. However, his very first producing job was for "Cuidado con el Angel" in the same year.

He went on to create many unforgettable telenovelas. These included "La Leona" and "La Cobarde". For both of these, he took on the roles of director, producer, and actor. His last directing project was the series "Cumbres Borrascosas" in 1979. This was a telenovela based on a famous novel by Emily Brontë.

After that, Ernesto focused mainly on being a producer. He produced twenty-five telenovelas in the 1980s, nine in the 1990s, and four in the 2000s. His final producing work was the telenovela "Barrera de Amor". In 2006, Ernesto was honored with the Special Golden Ariel award at the Ariel Awards. This award recognized his amazing career and all his contributions to the world of film and television.

His Final Bow

Ernesto Alonso passed away at his home in Mexico City when he was 90 years old. Sources say he knew his time was near and wanted to be in his own home during his final moments. Throughout his long career, Ernesto Alonso acted in sixty-three films. He also directed forty-three films and telenovelas. However, he is most remembered for producing an incredible 158 telenovelas. His work left a huge mark on Mexican television.
