Errol Freeman Brathwaite (born April 3, 1924 – died December 4, 2005) was a well-known writer from New Zealand. He wrote many exciting books, including stories about history and helpful travel guides. He also wrote plays for the radio!

About Errol Brathwaite

Errol Brathwaite was born in a place called Waipukurau, New Zealand, in 1924. He went to school at Timaru Boys' High School.

During the end of World War II, he joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force. He worked as an air gunner in the Pacific region.

After the war, in 1948, he married Alison Whyte in Christchurch. He also spent some time in the army before he started working in advertising.

Becoming a Writer

In 1959, Errol Brathwaite wrote his very first book. It was called Fear in the Night. This novel was set during the Second World War in the Pacific. It told the story of a New Zealand air crew trying to fix their plane before Japanese soldiers arrived.

After this, he decided to become a full-time writer. He wrote more than 30 books!

Between 1964 and 1967, he wrote three special novels: The Flying Fish, The Needle's Eye, and The Evil Day. These three books tell a long story set during the New Zealand Wars in the 1800s.

Errol Brathwaite also wrote many travel guides about New Zealand. These books helped people explore and learn about his home country. He also created many plays for radio.

Awards and Later Life

In 2001, Errol Brathwaite was given a special award. He became a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit. This award was for his great contributions to literature, which means his amazing writing.

Errol Brathwaite passed away in Christchurch in 2005. He was buried in Avonhead Cemetery.
