Erzsébet "Erzsi" Kovács (born June 2, 1928 – died April 6, 2014) was a famous Hungarian pop singer. She was known for her beautiful voice and long career. Erzsi Kovács faced a difficult time early in her life when she was arrested and spent three years in prison. After this, she bravely restarted her singing career and became very successful. She even recorded her last album, Mosolyogva búcsúzom (which means I Leave with a Smile), when she was 79 years old! She was also honored with the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary for her contributions.

Life Story of Erzsi Kovács

Erzsi Kovács had a challenging but inspiring life. In 1948, she became close with a football player named Sándor Szűcs. Because of the political situation at the time, their relationship was not allowed, and it put Szűcs's football career in danger.

A Difficult Time

Erzsi and Sándor decided to try and leave the country to find a better life. They found someone who promised to help them escape. However, this person was actually working for the authorities, and their attempt to leave was a trap. On March 6, 1951, they were stopped and arrested by soldiers from the ÁVÓ.

Erzsi Kovács was sent to prison in 1951. She was released in 1954, after three years. Sándor Szűcs faced much more severe consequences because he was also a police officer. He was sadly lost in 1951 due to the strict laws of the time, even though famous football players like Ferenc Puskás and Ferenc Szusza tried to help him.

Starting Over

After her release from prison, Erzsi first worked as an administrator. But her passion was singing, and she soon returned to her music career. She toured with Lehel Németh and the Holéczy music group. Her first big hit was the song "Régi óra halkan jár" ("The Old Clock Ticks Softly") in 1957. Even before that, in 1955, she had already sold two and a half million records, which is a huge success!

In 1964, her record company stopped working with her, so she decided to move abroad. For the next 14 years, she sang in different countries like Germany and Sweden, and even on cruise ships. When she returned to Hungary, she continued to perform, mostly in the countryside. She also had many concerts in big venues in Budapest. Her album Mosolyogva búcsúzom included a French song called "Quand S'arrêtent les violons."

Erzsi Kovács passed away on April 6, 2014, at the age of 85. She left behind a wonderful legacy of music.
