Escárcega (Spanish pronunciation: [esˈkaɾseɣa]) is a small city in the Mexican state of Campeche. It is located in the central part of the state. In 2010, about 29,477 people lived in the city of Escárcega.
The city is the main administrative center for the area around it. This area is called the Escárcega municipality. The municipality includes the city and many smaller communities. The largest of these is called División del Norte. In 2010, the whole municipality had a population of 54,184 people. Its total area is about 4,569.64 square kilometers.
Escárcega is an important place for travel. It sits where two major roads, Federal Highways 251 and 186, meet. A railway also crosses through the city. This railway connects Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, to Campeche, Campeche. Escárcega is a newer city. It grew a lot in the 20th century because of the new railways and roads. The city is named after Francisco Escárcega. He was a hero from the Mexican Revolution. He helped build many railways in southeastern Mexico.
