Esparragalejo is a small town in Spain. It is located in the province of Badajoz, which is part of the Extremadura region.
This town is about 13 kilometers (about 8 miles) away from the city of Mérida. Esparragalejo is special because of its old Roman dam, called the Esparragalejo Dam. It also has two natural lakes and celebrates fun religious festivals. During these festivals, people honor the town's special saint, the Virgin of Good Health. They go to church for a Mass, then fill the streets with music, processions, and shows for everyone, especially kids!
What's in a Name?
The name Esparragalejo comes from a word that means "asparagus field" or "communal pastureland." This land was known as the Esparragal.
A small ending was added to the name because the town stayed quite small for many, many years. So, "Esparragalejo" means "little Esparragal."
