Esrom cheese, also known as Danish Port Salut, is a tasty, pale yellow cheese from Denmark. It's a semi-soft cheese made from cow's milk. It has a strong smell but a sweet and full flavor that many people enjoy!

The Story of Esrom Cheese

Esrom cheese gets its name from a place called Esrom Abbey. This was a monastery in Denmark where monks first made this type of cheese a long time ago, until the year 1559.

Later, in the 1930s, people started making a modern version of Esrom cheese. Experts at Statens Forsøgsmejeri created a standard recipe for it. The first big cheese factory to make it was Midtsjællands Herregårdsmejeri in the early 1940s.

Esrom cheese was very popular in Denmark during the 1960s. But then, it almost disappeared! Luckily, many cheese companies have started making Esrom cheese again in recent years.

What Esrom Cheese is Like

Esrom cheese has many small holes inside it. It feels a bit stretchy and buttery when you touch it. It has a waxy, yellow-brown skin, which is called a rind.

This cheese is often eaten on its own or melted. It's great in casseroles or sandwiches. Esrom cheese is similar to other cheeses like havarti or Saint Paulin.

Because it has a bold flavor, Esrom cheese tastes really good with dark beers and red wines. It takes a long time to ripen, about 10 to 12 weeks. During this time, it sits in rectangular molds to get its shape and flavor.

Esrom's Special Protection

Esrom is one of only three Danish cheeses that have a special mark from the EU. This mark is called PGI, which stands for "Protected Geographical Indication."

What does PGI mean? It means that Esrom cheese can only be made in Denmark. It must use milk from Danish cows. Also, it can only be made at special dairies that follow strict rules for making the cheese. The other two Danish cheeses with this special protection are Danbo and Danablu.
