Essex is a small, unincorporated community in Ohio, United States. It is located in Union County, specifically in Jackson Township. You can find it on the east side of Rush Creek. It sits right where State Routes 37 and 739 meet. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.

History of Essex

Essex was first mapped out on September 2, 1836. A man named William C. Lawrence did the survey for John Cheney.

Early Hopes and Growth

People originally hoped Essex would become the main town for a new county. However, these plans did not work out. Because of this, the community grew slowly at first. The very first cabin in Essex was built in 1838.

Post Office and Businesses

A post office opened in Essex on July 13, 1848. It was first called the Rush Creek Post Office. Tabor Randall was the first Postmaster, which is the person in charge of the post office.

By 1877, Essex had grown to include two stores, a schoolhouse, and a sawmill. These were important places for the people living there. Later, in 1883, the community had even more businesses. There was a general store, a grocery store, and a mill for flour and wood. You could also find a blacksmith, a repair shop, a doctor, and a shoe shop.

Community Groups

A group called the Rush Creek Grange was started in 1874. It was a farmers' organization, but it was only active for a few years. Another group, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, built a meeting hall in 1875. This group officially started in Essex on June 20, 1876. By 1883, it had at least 16 members.

Changes to Mail Service

The post office in Essex changed its name to Rushcreek on November 3, 1894. However, it was closed down on June 29, 1907. Today, mail service for Essex comes through the Richwood Post Office.
