A Pioneer for Women Artists

Essi Renvall was a very important artist for women in Finland. She was one of the first female sculptors to receive "commissioned public works." This means that cities or organizations paid her to create sculptures for public places.

She was also able to earn a living for herself and her family through her art. This was a big achievement for a woman artist at that time. A publishing company called WSOY asked her to create busts of their well-known writers. These included famous authors like Mika Waltari and Saima Harmaja.
