Parliament building in Oranjestad |
The Estates of Aruba (also called the Staten van Aruba in Dutch) is the main law-making body, or parliament, of Aruba. It is a unicameral legislature, which means it has only one main group of members.
The Estates of Aruba has 21 members. These members are chosen by the people in an election every four years. They are elected using a system called proportional representation. This means that political parties get seats in the Estates based on how many votes they receive from the public.
Each member keeps their seat until the next general election. The leader of the political party that wins the most seats usually becomes the Prime Minister.
