History of Estella
The area where Estella is now was first mapped out in 1847 by a team working for the U.S. government. In 1852, another team carefully marked all the corners of the land sections. They walked through forests and waded through rivers, using chains and compasses to measure everything.
After their work, the surveyor described the area. He said it had many cedar and tamarack swamps that were not good for farming. The land was mostly flat and covered with thick forests of pine, hemlock, tamarack, sugar maple, and birch trees. The soil was okay for farming in some parts. He also noted that the Chippewa and Fisher Rivers flowed through the northwest corner of the area. The river banks were high and covered with pine and hemlock trees.
The town was named after Laura Estella Flint. She was the wife of Warren S. Flint, a local business owner. Warren S. Flint also became the first postmaster in Estella in 1886.
