Estelle Hemsley (May 5, 1887 – November 5, 1968) was a very important African American actress. She performed in both plays and movies.
Estelle Hemsley was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress. This was for her role in the 1959 movie Take a Giant Step. She also appeared in other famous films. These include America, America (1963), which was nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture. She played Grandmother Topouzoglou in that movie.
Her other well-known movie roles were Cla-Cla in Green Mansions (1959). She also played the mother of Ruby Dee in Edge of the City (1957). In 1965, she was Catherine in the movie Baby the Rain Must Fall.
