A Poet from Uruguay
Esther de Cáceres was born in the city of Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1903. She was a very smart and dedicated student. She even became a doctor after studying in Montevideo!
Her Life and Work
After becoming a doctor, Esther de Cáceres chose to teach. She taught humanities, which includes subjects like literature and philosophy, to students who were training to become teachers themselves. She also became part of a group of very smart and influential people in Montevideo. This group was interested in art, literature, and ideas.
Esther de Cáceres started publishing her poetry when she was still young.
- In 1929, she released her first book of poems called Las ínsulas extrañas.
- Two years later, in 1931, she published another book titled Canción.
She continued to write and publish many more poetry books throughout her life. One of her famous collections, Concierto de amor y otros poemas, was published in 1951. This book was special because it had an introduction written by Gabriela Mistral, another very famous poet from Chile who even won the Nobel Prize!
Esther de Cáceres passed away in Montevideo in 1971. Her poems continue to be read and loved by many people in Uruguay and beyond.
