The Estévez Palace (in Spanish: Palacio Estévez) is a historic building located in Plaza Independencia, Montevideo, Uruguay. It was designed by Manoel de Castel in 1873, combining Doric and Colonial styles. This palace has played an important role in Uruguay's history. It once served as the main workplace for the President of Uruguay. Today, it is a museum filled with interesting items and memories from the Uruguayan presidency.

A Palace for Presidents

The Estévez Palace was first owned by a man named Francisco Estévez and his family. In 1880, the Uruguayan government bought the building. It was then decided that the palace would become the official workplace for the president. President Lorenzo Latorre was one of the first presidents to use it in 1890.

Where Did Presidents Work?

For many years, the Estévez Palace was the heart of the Uruguayan government. It was where presidents made important decisions and met with leaders. However, after democracy returned to Uruguay in 1985, the president's office moved.

President Julio María Sanguinetti decided to move the main office of the Executive Power to the Liberty Building. This building had previously been used as the Ministry of Defence. Later, during the government of President Tabaré Vázquez, the presidential office moved again. It moved to the Torre Ejecutiva, which is right next to the Estévez Palace.

The Palace as a Museum

Even though the Estévez Palace is no longer the president's main office, it still holds great importance. It has been turned into a museum. Inside, you can find many artifacts and mementos. These items tell the story of the Uruguayan presidency and the people who held the office. It's a great place to learn about Uruguay's past leaders and their work.
